A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
