Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such drugs must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
