The Trump movement's most revealing and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president started showing all observers his intentions for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID amounts to 600,000 and rising, and presently research projected his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – really, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.

As confusing as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into an icon of animosity who endorses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness of him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a means to educate the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your jacket you must offer him your sweater also.
The obvious and clear reality that the Jesus from scripture advocates for a type of profound affection concentrated on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Best Within Us
So I have been encouraged to observe the determined opposition against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has provided substantial consolation to participate in developing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged voters to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We must have to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and calls to the finest aspects in US history.
